In July, we enter an astrological phase that corresponds to the dog days of summer. On an energetic level, summer is associated with the element of fire. There is more heat in every way you engage with life—and with more heat comes a need for clear intention setting so you can make responsible use of your personal flame.
Fire is the element of transformation. Think about what happens when fire shows up in your everyday life. You feel it in your metabolism, exercise, passion, anger, and in setting your intentions to action. There’s a considerable amount of transformation that is essential—in the world and within each of us.
Your relationship with fire will dictate how the month of July will play out for you. The full Moon in the middle of the month will illuminate how you tend to respond in situations that require you to take action. Observe yourself and make any necessary changes. At the end of the month, the new Moon in Leo will spark a fire that is infused with hope. Harness this spark and use it toward useful aims.
Mars, the planet of war, enters the grounded sign of Taurus. In Latin, Taurus means “bull.” Bulls can be very kind and peaceful creatures. However, when prodded and provoked, they can quickly become enraged. This is the potential of Mars in Taurus—normally peaceful beings becoming aggravated and geared up for battle.
Needing to assert yourself to receive your foundational rights and values can be infuriating. Take a moment and remain mindful of how you expend your primary resource, your energy. Consistent and sustainable effort tends to be more effective than a short burst of outraged energy.
Mercury also enters Cancer on this day.
In astrology, a square occurs when two planets form a 90-degree angle to one another. This position creates a tense relationship between these planets and can be a catalyst for action.
The emotional sign of Cancer isn’t the most ideal space for the thought-driven planet of Mercury as it brings about the experience of being led more by feeling than by logic. The planet Jupiter represents growth while Aries has a tendency to be rather self-interested. When these planets and signs are positioned in a square with one another, what results is the kind of emotive communication that has the same impact as hurling fire balls.
Any measures that bring a cooling effect to you, including the form of breathwork known as chandra pranayama, will allow your words to flow in a way that is conscious, purposeful, and conveys your intended message.
This full Moon takes place in the Earth sign of Capricorn, which represents authority, yet it will be conjunct with Pluto, a planet that asks you to address where you feel powerful and powerless. This will be a time to contemplate the nature of power and your attitude toward it. If you define power solely on the prevailing narrative told by society, then you will have a tendency to define your circumstances from a place of powerlessness. This diminished sense of power is reinforced if you define power solely on achieving your personal goals while ignoring the detriment to others.
We each have a responsibility to one another, yet the weight of reality doesn’t need to rest entirely on your shoulders. The full Moon will illuminate how you tend to respond to power dynamics. May this awareness help you direct your fire toward useful aims.
Also, ask yourself, in what ways are you writing the story of your life within your limits? Note that in this context, “your limits” are not negative. You have a responsibility in this life that is unique to you. You need to know your limits—which boundaries you need to uphold in order to do your part and become your own authority. There will always be long-term as well as short-term approaches that address the empowerment process. Take both into account.
Cazimi means a planet’s orbit takes it close to the Sun where, according to astrology, the planet and its energy are purified by the intense heat and light. This transit will take place in the sign of Cancer and can evoke many emotions. It can also bring an understanding of how to connect your heart and your thoughts in order to make the most caring and nurturing choices for yourself.
When Venus, the planet of relationships, enters the water sign of Cancer, it creates the opportunity to observe our relationships as if they were being reflected back to us on the still surface of placid lake. What are your relationships mirroring back to you in your life?
When a planet is in Cancer, it’s crucial to understand how you relate to that planet’s energy within yourself. Cancer is the archetype of the mother. It is our duty to begin to cultivate a better relationship with the nurturing-mother archetype within each of us. Care for self is inherently care for others.
The ponderous planet of Mercury moves from the introverted water sign of Cancer to the extroverted fire sign of Leo. You can expect an emotional situation that you have been processing to obtain the fuel to be actualized. Using your voice in creative and expressive ways will be important for the rest of the month. Be prepared to say what you mean and mean what you say.
The Sun enters the sign in the zodiac where it feels the most at home. Here you will more easily access the royal parts of yourself, but remember that royalty is of service to the kingdom. A centralizing force isn’t simply the center of attention, but also a central resource.
The new Moon in Leo is in a supportive connection with Jupiter in Aries. This brings a lot of fire to the next lunation cycle. Jupiter also goes retrograde from July 28th until November 23rd. The new Moon in Leo is likely to bring with it a fiery uproar that on the surface may be experienced as alarming. However, it is a setup for what is to come later in the year.
The new Moon occurs on the same day Jupiter goes retrograde, which will slow down any process and progress until the end of October. Focus on feeding the fire where it as much as you are able but diverting yourself from being consumed by it. Sit with what you are seeking to create rather than taking direct and immediate action. The new Moon is time to plant seeds, not a time to admire your fully bloomed plants.
Mercury in Leo communicates in a way that’s about being seen. Mercury is a planet that represents youth. Saturn represents authority figures and established structures. Saturn is currently retrograde in Aquarius, signifying a time for established structures to revise the ways in which they are moving into the future. When tensions are high and that which is youthful collides with that which is established, the experience is very tangible.
How are you standing at the crossroads of what is to come and what has been? With the Leo and Aquarius axis, you are invited to use your creative force toward communal aims. If you don’t use your gifts for the greater good, then what is the point?
